Bridges
Understanding and predicting the interaction between wind and bridges is critical in the design and construction stages of a new bridge. Certain wind conditions and bridge design combinations can lead to catastrophic bridge failure, as experienced by the original bridge at Tacoma Narrows. Significant information can be obtained by considering the effect of crosswinds on the bridge. Under these conditions, many bridge designs can be simplified to a two-dimensional problem.
Virtualwind is developing software tools to predict the effects of crosswinds on bridge cross-sections.
